This table top tree skirt did not get finished in time for Christmas 2020, but it is ready for 2021. I started this tree skirt at the end of November thinking it would be done in time for Christmas. Unfortunately, life got really busy, and I did not get it done. This project uses the Winterland Bundled Up fat quarters from Art Gallery Fabrics, which I have had in my stash for a couple of years. I have been wanting to make something with this fabric, but couldn't decide on the perfect project for it. Finally, I thought it would be great as a tree skirt. Initially, I was going to make a full sized tree skirt, but I pulled out a dresden template I bought a while ago, and settled on making a small tree skirt.
I cut two pieces of fabric from each fat quarter with the dresden template, giving me a total of 20 fabric pieces. The layout of the tree skirt is simple. I laid out 10 of the pieces, trying to alternate between the lighter fabrics and the darker fabrics. The second set of 10 pieces followed the same order as the first 10. This layout created a circular looking skirt.
After laying out the dresden cut fabric pieces, I thought the centre opening might be too big. To make it smaller, I cut pieces of Melange 407-Red from Stof Fabrics to make the centre smaller. This also added a nice pop of red.
Once I sewed the fabric pieces together, the centre ended up smaller than anticipated, but I just used an Olfa Circle Cutter to make the centre bigger.
The Melange red fabric used for the centre was also used for the backing and binding. I kept the quilting simple. I set my stitch length to 3 mm, and stitched 1/4" along each side of the seams.
This tree skirt is the perfect size for a 2' - 3' table top tree. I love the pop of colour the red gives, and it coordinates well with the little bits of red in the fabric.
I have enough fabric leftover to make a full size Christmas tree skirt to coordinate with this small one. Which will give me a good reason to have two trees decorated for the holidays.
